The kinase complement of the mouse genome, the kinome, provided a start point for comprehensive investigation of protein phosphorylation. Caenepeel et al. identified 540 protein kinase genes and 97 protein kinase pseudogenes in mouse (Caenepeel et al., 2004 PNAS).
